Fairtrade is an international campaign that ensures that producers in developing countries receive a fair price for their goods. There are now many Fairtrade products available in Middlesbrough. The most popular are tea, coffee, sugar and bananas. However, a wide range of other products are now available including clothing, footballs, oranges and fruit juice.

Middlesbrough became a Fairtrade Town in March 2007 and we are very proud of the accolade. Being a Fairtrade Town demonstrated Middlesbrough’s commitment to global as well as local issues and improves consumer choice.

In Middlesbrough, Fairtrade is co-ordinated by the Middlesbrough Fairtrade Group, which includes representatives from the Council, private business and the Voluntary and Community Sector. The group organises events and activities around Fairtrade and also monitors the number of retail and catering outlets stocking at least two Fairtrade products. For a list of these Fairtrade Retail Outlets please click on the attachment in the downloads box to the right of this page.

If you are already using Fairtrade products or start to use them, please let Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC) know by completing the Middlesbrough Fairtrade Partners’ Form to the right of this page or by contacting MEC on 01642 811300. You will then receive your certificate and window sticker demonstrating your commitment and be added to their database.
